What are Colanders and Strainers?

Although technically, we use a colander to drain (discarding liquids like pasta water) and a sieve to strain, we generally refer to both as "strainers" (saving liquids like broth for stock).

A colander has a large bowl (often with two handles) and feet or a base that allow it to stand alone in a sink while you pour pasta or boiled vegetables into it. Colanders, which are normally made of plastic, stainless steel, aluminum, or enamel-coated porcelain, have a lot of small holes evenly spaced all over, but some are made of mesh. To avoid liquid from pooling up, better versions have a lot of holes near the bottom of the bowl.

At the same time, a strainer is a generic term that refers to any kind of, well, strainer. It's typically fine mesh and bowl-shaped, and it's perfect for draining pasta or rinsing a pint of berries.

Decorative colanders: If a colander's holes are used to create a decorative pattern or shape, it will most likely drain slowly due to a lack of holes.

Number of holes: If your colander isn't draining quickly enough, it probably doesn't have enough holes.

Size of holes: For draining small foods like rice, use a colander with a fine mesh. However, if tiny particles get trapped in the fine mesh, cleaning it can be difficult. A standard colander would have holes ranging in size from a pinhead to a pencil eraser that is easy to see.

Easily drain water and sauces

Typically, when you pour food into the calendar, any liquid that has been poured into the strainer with it will drain through the holes, leaving only the food. Depending on what you need from the food, you can use calendars in various ways.

Draining of juices:  Sometimes you want to save the juice from certain foods, such as fruits, after extracting it from the fruit. Place the colander in a bowl large enough to catch the juice that drains away. 

 Draining water: You can use the colander to drain the hot water from pasta, tomatoes, or other similar foods that have been cooked in water. Most of the time, you can only let the water run down the sink drain while the food is caught in the colander.

Washing foods: Washing fruits, vegetables, or small grains like rice in a colander works well primarily because the colander prevents the food from dropping into the sink while allowing the water to drain. 

Available in different sizes

You should consider a few things when choosing the perfect size of the colander. If you often cook big pots of pasta, you will want a colander that’s similar to the same size as your pot. To handle various types of food, you will need a second or even a third colander that has comparably smaller or simply different-sized holes.

Stainless steel easy to clean

Keep in mind that when colanders or strainers are made of plastic, they will most probably not last for a long time, and will generally be tough to clean. On the other hand, if you are choking stainless steel colanders or strainers the materials will ensure a long-lasting experience in your kitchen. Those will also be relatively easier to wash and clean.
